The 2027 PSTN switch-off
The PSTN switch-off is going to come into effect in January 2027. In this guide, we've answered questions about how this will affect your lift communication system and what you must do.
Why is the digital switch happening?
Older analogue telephone lines are being replaced by fibre connections to provide broadband connections to both domestic and commercial users. Originally, this was meant to come into effect in 2025 but will now happen in January 2027.
What will happen to your current lift alarm communication system?
A lot of lift alarm systems will use analogue telephone lines. They will require a dial tone and dual-tone multi-frequency (Known as DTMF) signalling in order to work. They will also make use of the DC voltage available on the line. Many of the UK's most common communication providers offer what is known as an "analogue telephone adaptor". This is to provide analogue support on fibre connections.
In many cases though, the dial tone and DTMF may still not work. In due course, lift alarm communication systems will be available to work over fibre connections using VOIP.
What are the different types of connections?
There are 3 main types of connections that you will find in your building.
- Analogue (PSTN) - This is your traditional copper wires
- Digial/ Voip - Voice and data that is delivered over a broadband connection
- GSM / Cellular - A mobile SIM that operates over 4g/5g

What do you need to do?
Typically, building/business owners will be responsible for the telephone line in the building. If you're responsible for this, you will need to:
