Safe Working Lifts Ltd’s prompt and efficient 24-hour, 365 days per year call handling facility prioritises calls in ‘real time’, allowing us to achieve an efficient service to all domestic, commercial and industrial dwellings, with the capability of working on all ages and types of lift equipment by way of locally appointed qualified engineers and technicians.
Below are a selection of commonly asked questions regarding lift breakdowns, followed by some information and details about what separates Safe Working Lifts Ltd from other companies, and how we can assist you.

One of the biggest issues we face when taking over lift contracts is that the wiring diagrams for the lift have been removed by the previous company. To assist with this we have created an online database to hold technical information and documents.
As well as our engineers extensive technical knowledge, each of them has access to our online database of technical documents, wiring diagrams and equipment manuals. This database has over 5000 different files for a huge variety and selection of lifts.
In the event that we do not have the information on your specific lift, we can contact the manufacturers for replacements.
Building owners have a responsibility to carry buildings’ insurance, and as there is a third party risk associated with lifts, so it is wise to insure against this. This is a general practice and widely accepted as the best way of complying with the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER), requiring passenger-carrying lifts to undergo a thorough impartial examination by a competent person, and the completion of supplementary testing. See ‘Simple Guidance for Lift Owners’.

Mrs Wheeler
Safe Working Lifts Customer
Like any machine, there is hundreds (potentially thousands) of different parts and components that make up a lift. It could only take 1 of those to fail or become worn beyond repair or adjustment to stop a lift from working correctly.
Think of your lift as if it was a car. Lift maintenance visits are the servicing, whereas LOLER examinations are the MOT, and the attending engineers are the mechanics in case of any issues.
Safe Working Lifts also work to a planned preventative maintenance schedule. This helps us to identify and rectify potential issues before they occur and inform our clients of any parts that need replacing due to wear and tear, therefore reducing the risk of any lift downtime.
If you are a lift owner or someone responsible for the safe operation of a lift used at work, such as a facilities manager or supervisor, you are a ‘duty holder’ under LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998).
Unless yourself or someone on site has recieved passenger release training then the best thing to do is contact your lift mainteance provider who will send an engineer out to assist you and release the trapped passenger.
We would recommend that you stay close by the lift where the trapped passenger can hear your voice, and do your best to keep them calm until the engineers arrive.
Lifts should also have a means of communication such as an auto-dialler, to enable communcation between passengers and people on the outside in case of emergencies. This is effectively a telephone that allows constant communication with pre-programmed numbers. (up to 4 numbers can be programmed onto the unit by our engineers).
For all contracted customers Safe Working Lifts operate a manned 24 hour 365 day emergency call out service. This means that in the unfortunate event that your lift breaks down/stops working out of office hours your call will still be answered by a member of staff who can assist you or send one of our engineers to site.
Each of our engineers carries a selection of commonly used parts in their vehcles to help keep downtime to a minimum wherever possible.
In instances where parts require ordering we have numerous different suppliers we can source parts from with the utmost urgency, this enables us to provide quick turnarounds at a cost suitable for our customers.
Safe Working Lifts also has one of the biggest independent selection of parts avaliable and in stock at our office. From lift drives and boards to belts and relays, these parts cover a wide range of manufacturers such as: KONE, Schindler, OTIS, Thyssen Krupp, Lester Controls & many more.
If your existing lift company has left your lift ‘out of service’ we would be more than happy to offer you a 2nd opinion & cost of repair to get your lift back up and running correctly.
To provide you with our 2nd opinion we would attend site and carry out our own complete checks, provide you with a report of our findings, and quote to repair your lift.
Our call outs/breakdowns are completed in the order that they are placed with us. There is no ‘priorities’ as all of our customers are a priority and putting lifts back into service quickly is one of our biggest aims.
All of our vehicles are no more than 3 years old and are fitted with satellite guidance systems to enable a prompt response to calls, and trackers to provide customers with accurate ETA to site.
For some customers we can also provide a 1 time tracking link to enable them to track our engineers journey to them for peace of mind.
