Following a LOLER examination on your lift, you may require a supplementary test, or appropriate tests carried out by a lift consultant to ensure the condition of your lift is up to a high standard.

Supplementary Tests are usually called for after a LOLER examination, Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (often abbreviated to LOLER or referred to as a ‘Thorough Examination’) place duties on people and companies who own, operate or have control over lifting equipment. This includes all businesses and organisations whose employees use lifting equipment, whether owned by them or not, and applies to all lifts and hoists used to lift people or loads.
Thorough examinations are usually carried out by a third party and it is possible that the person carrying out the inspections may call for ‘Supplementary Testing’ following a LOLER examination.
The need for supplementary tests is defined as: “Appropriate tests and/or examinations called for by the competent person where concerns regarding the condition of equipment arise from the thorough examination.”

Who created lift supplementary tests?
Supplementary tests have been designed by a review committee consisting of lift owners, users, lift maintenance providers, inspectors, lift consultants, lift manufacturers and other professional bodies and chaired by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
What is done during a Supplementary Test?
Supplementary Tests are more in-depth exminations on specific equipment and components. Below is a selection of some of the available Supplementary Tests that could be called to be carried out:
- Earth continuity
- Terminal speed reduction systems
- Safety gear system (governor, safety gear, suspension failure device)
- Landing door interlocks
- Low pressure detection devices
- Car overload warning detection devices, and many more.
Are Supplementary Tests required if my lift is regularly serviced?
Supplementary Tests do not replace maintenance vists or LOLER examinations, they are carried out as an additional test if required.
Supplementary Tests are usually called for by the competent person during a LOLER examination if they see them as necessary, at which point they must be carried out.
Who can call for supplementary test to be carried out?
The competent person that carries outs your Thorough Examinations (LOLER) can call for ‘supplementary tests’ to be carried out when any concerns may arise during the examination.
Do I have to get supplementary test carried out?
If supplementary tests are called for by the competent person during their thorough examination (LOLER) then they must be carried out.
As thorough examinations are a requirement under PUWER, the need for supplementary tests may stop the competent person from completing the examinations.
